Robert M. Barr and Roberta Armstrong Barr Foundation Scholarship

Available to: Colorado State resident enrolled at Fort Lewis College or Western State College

for no fewer than twelve credits. Student must exhibit and document a solid history of exemplary

citizenship gauged by involvement in the community, through civic engagement, service learning projects,

etc. Student must prove commitment to teaching and academic excellence, while continuing to hold the

aforementioned values throughout the term of the scholarship. Student must certify genuine financial

need.

Provided by: Mrs. Roberta Barr to help potential teachers gain the education they need to be

successful. Mrs. Barr served as an educator over several decades and understands the importance of well-

trained, dedicated teachers. As an alumna of Fort Lewis College and Western State College, she has

committed to providing scholarships to students who have demonstrated capability, promise, community

involvement, and financial need.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Selected by: The Scholarship Committee at the respective colleges will screen the

applications, conduct the interviews and make recommendations to the Foundation. The Foundation Board

will make the final determination of the awardees and the amounts.

Application: Submit a complete application to the Teacher Education Program (by April 1,

2007) including: certification of residence, financial statement certifying need (all sources of

income), justification of amount of funds requested, two letters of reference attesting to the

applicant's predicted success in the teaching profession, a completed interview with Fort Lewis or

Western State faculty. The scholarship recipient must sustain enrollment throughout the term of the

scholarship at 12 semester hours and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the term of the scholarship.

Applicants may apply for two terms at a time, up to and including four times (8 terms total). Should two

terms be awarded, it is the responsibility of the recipient to provide the information to the

scholarship committee that s/he is eligible for the second term. In reapplying for third and subsequent

terms, the recipient will need to supply GPA information, financial statements, transcripts and an essay

attesting to how s/he has progressed toward becoming a teacher.


Magdalene Brennecke/Elkins Scholarship

Available to: Junior standing or above at the end of the term in which he/she applies; must plan to teach at either elementary or secondary level; must be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program; must have a 3.00 GPA in education and overall; must have demonstrated personal characteristics which would predict success as a teacher. Financial need will be considered.

Provided by: Family and friends of Magdalene Elkins, who was a 1920 graduate and life-long friend of Western State College.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Dr. Kenneth H. Hansen Memorial Education Scholarship

Available to: Full-time students of Western State College; non-traditional (adult) students as defined by the WIT Program – either starting or resuming their college education; be studying in Western's Teacher Education Program to become a teacher; have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or greater; demonstrate appropriate abilities, skills and promise, as observed by Western State College's Teacher Education faculty. Preference shall be given to students with financial need. Provided by: Mary Alice Hansen and her family, to provide scholarship assistance to Western State College students and to serve to celebrate the memory of her late husband, Kenneth.

Amount: Depending on funds available.

Sophie Hamrick Knight Memorial Scholarship

Available to: Western students who have established financial need and a positive attitude; must demonstrate interest and potential in becoming a teacher. Preference will be given to freshmen, but open to students in all classes and to high school graduates who may not be eligible for other scholarships awarded to top 5% of graduating class.

Provided by: Her son, V. Robert Kerr, to perpetuate the memory of Sophie Simpson Knight, an outstanding example of academic achievement, citizenship, and an exemplar of courage and dedication in the pursuit of education and knowledge. Mrs. Knight's association with Western began in 1944 and continued for more than 20 years, graduating in 1944 with an AB and a Life Certificate in 1957 at the age of 64.

Paul and Dorothy Reid Scholarship

Available to: Full-time Junior or Senior of Western State College; recipient must be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program at time of selection; must be actively participating in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sport; must hold a GPA of 3.0 or better. In the event of multiple applicants, financial need will be the deciding factor. Preference will be given to students with a desire to coach. Provided by: Paul and Dorothy Reid want to provide this scholarship to students with a desire to become a teacher and a coach. Paul was a Professor of the Teacher Education program for 27 years and Dorothy work in WSC Registrars office for nine years. Amount: Award depends of funds available.

Selected by: The WSC Director of Financial Aid in cooperation with the Department of Teacher Education and Department of Athletics.

Application: Complete and return a copy of “The Common Scholarship Application” by April 1 to the Financial Aid Department


Roberta M. Rouse Scholarship

Available to: Colorado residents. Must be a full-time student in good academic standing; must be planning a career in elementary education; have demonstrated academic performance and financial need. Provided by: Her children to honor their mother. Roberta Rouse met her husband, Fred, while they were attending Western State College. Following World War II, they returned to Western where Roberta supported her husband as he completed his education and began his career as an educator. After the birth of their last of nine children, Roberta returned to complete her BA and MA degrees in elementary education. Seven of their children also attended Western State College and five of the children became schoolteachers.

Amount: The amount of the award shall not exceed one and one-half times the rate of tuition for one academic year.

Selected by: Western State College Teacher Education Program

Application: Submit letter of application along with letters of recommendation from high school counselor and/or Western State College Teacher Education faculty to the Teacher Education Program by April 1, 2007. Copies of transcripts should also be included.


Dan Tredway Memorial Education Scholarship

Available to: Colorado residents with preference given to Western Slope. Must be a full-time senior, obtaining Education Licensure. Must demonstrate financial need and maintain a GPA of at least 3.00. Must be a motivated individual and high achiever.

Provided by: The family of Dan Tredway to honor Dr.Tredway, a professor of Education at Western State College for 35 years and beloved Gunnison community leader and member. Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Selected by: The Western State College Teacher Education Department in cooperation with the WSC Director of Financial Aid.

Application: Complete and return a copy of “The Common Scholarship Application” by April 1 to the Financial Aid Department.


Ann Zugelder Award Fund

Available to: Men and women students at Western State College pursuing certification in elementary education; must be a full-time sophomore or junior at time of selection, or junior or senior at time award is given; must have a 3.50 GPA or higher. Must exhibit high standards of scholarship, leadership and citizenship and above average communication skills.

Provided by: Ann Zugelder, one of Gunnison's most distinguished citizens. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, maintaining her interest and support of elementary education after her retirement in 1967.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.
