CIGNA

Overview

My internship at CIGNA was with TECDP which stands for Technology Early Career Development Program. I was in this program with about 20 other Computer Scienc/Information Systems majors from colleges all over the country. This program was very organized and was a fairly positive experience. I participated in lots of training over the summer and networked with my executives of the company. My project at CIGNA was to create an online survey for some of their larger corporate accounts.

Gunnison County IT Department

Overview:

My internships was working with the Gunnison County IT Department on a project for web applications. The initial goals of the project was to research and implement a few different applications that would run on a php and sql server. Tom Struble, a network consultant for the Gunnison County IT Department, served as the internship adviser.

Goals

  • Collect business requirements
  • Find multiple open source applications fitting requirements
  • Install and configure applications on development web server
  • Document everything
  • Test all applications from a user point of view
  • Present pros and cons of each application
  • Help choose one final application
  • Document everything
  • Migrate to production server
  • Create user documentation and training

Desired Applications for the County:

  • A group shared calendar. This was intended for everyone in the office to have somewhere that they can schedule meetings with other users within the office and keep a schedule of other things within the office. One of the major goals of the application was to make sure the open source program allowed different groups of users, and would allow these groups to see a shared calendar for the group as well as the shared calendar for the entire office.
  • A to do list. The mentality behind this application was to give the office a shared to do list that could be modified by anyone in the office.
  • A Help desk Ticket System. This was for the internal IT department. They wanted a ticket troubleshooting system for the office to submit requests for the IT department to service requests. These applications were not estimated to take the entire 5 weeks to complete, but due to some other complications, we barely got into the testing phase of these applications.
  • A Wiki for development and research of applications and documentation of current procedures and configurations of the applications on the server.
  • A Forum for discussion of ideas and possible applications that can be used on the server.

Progress

  • MediaWiki including customization of skin and permissions
  • GroupWare which included calendar, to-do list and email
  • Forum
  • Documentation

Results

Pros

  • Linux skills
  • Server Administration skills
  • Installing open source applications/researching open source applications
  • Collecting business requirements
  • Documentation!!
  • Knowing to never work for Tom again!

Cons

  • Working for free
  • Having a crazy boss
