Math370/Project
From MCIS Wiki
Project: Due April 24. Select a theme or issue that interests you and write a paper that follows your theme through the history of mathematics. The project must include mathematics that was done in the 20th century. The project is required for an A in this course. It is optional for others.
Details: Please submit an 10-12 page paper that traces a mathematical idea or concept throughout the history of mathematics. Every chapter of the book should have a contribution to the paper-even if it is just an explanation of why the idea does not appear there. The paper should include both significant mathematics and detailed history. It must be detailed and show you understand what your are writing about. The project provides an opportunity for you to study exactly what you want to learn. You must include a written explanation of why you chose your topic.
In grading the projects I will look for evidence of:
- significant mathematical and historical investigations by you.
- taking your own curiosity seriously - asking thoughtful questions and following them up with investigative work.
- originality of topic and creativity in presentation.
- inclusion of questions that you have but were unable to solve.
- a neat and professional presentation.
Theme: Mechanical drawing devices thought the history of mathematics.
Reason for selection: I have worked with several civil engineers who have had collections of old drawing tools and I have always found it fascinating to know about tools; were they came from, original purpose, creation, and any other information I could find out.
