It is a unique outdoor program focused on developing outdoor leadership skills in its participants. Whether it is backpacking in the beautiful San Juan Mountains or listening to an interpretive talk, CORE gives students the ability to explore the many different career options in the Recreation field. It exposes students to things such as outdoor mountain guiding, climbing, ropes course facilitation, the National Parks system, primitive technology, Outward Bound and NOLS, group management, and many other essential skills needed for the outdoor enthusiast or any person seeking an amazing life-changing experience.

CORE is a field semester at Western State College of Colorado, which has completed three successful years, including a trip to Patagonia in the fall of 2007. The plan for spring 2009 is to head to Costa Rica.
