This section of CORE 2006 consisted of 12 days backpacking through the Weminuge Wilderness in the San Juan mountains. In order to complete a successful expedition CORE students had to come up with their own route plan, organize gear, purchase food, make rations, organize cook groups, and have a good attitude. During each of the 12 days, one student took on the responsibilities of being the leader of the day. This gave each student the chance to manage a part of the backpacking expedition with the guidance of qualified instructors. The leader of the day was resposible for that days route plan, risk management, breaks, meal times, and campsite selection. Another aspect of the 12 backpacking trip was group lessons. Each cook group taught lessons on backcountry skills including things such as; LNT, campsite selection, packing your backpack, navigation and GPS, fire building, river crossing, hygiene, native plant species, and many other essential outdoor skills needed for an outdoor educator. CORE 2006 students faced extreme weather, challenging cirumstances, injuries, and servere blisters, but they had an amazing time while covering over 60 miles of backcountry terrain and summiting four 13,000' passes.
