Mosquito Hut Backcountry Shredding Trip 2007

Backcountry Bliss
In mid-February of 2007, two skiers and five splitboarders entered into the backcountry for a weekend of sun-crusts, knee-deep, and wind-blow powder. Starting from the Washington-Gulch trail-head early Saturday morning, the group skinned in the rather flat 5 miles in no time and broke for lunch at the hut. What an amazing hut it was!! Propane driven lighting and cooking added to the comfort of the numerous couches, dining table, large, warm wood burning heater and an up-stairs sleeping arrangement built for a king and queen on their honeymoon. Absolutely beautiful!
On Saturday we decided to hike behind the house on a South facing aspect, looking for powpow. What we found was lots of hard crusts and a great crash course in splitboard touring/skinning mode for some. Not bad though, skinning on a splitboard is rather easy to learn and master while in the field, because practicing it at home really does not cut it. Once we made our summit we chilled out up top, enjoying an enchanting view of the deep snow soaked mountains while turning our attention to a lost binding pin! ! Yikes! Bad news bears for sure! ‘MacGyvered’ it and rode some crazy, tuff 2 inch thick crust layer with sugar underneath, Everyone took a fall, some worse than others, but all falls were those ‘in the pow’ falls so no worries ehh!?
Spent the night in the cozy cabin, fever. Huge pasta meal prepared with love by the entire group, with a no-bake cheese cake forming outside. Played some indecent Scrabble™ rounds while a sly little fox comes charging the dinning room window only to catch numerous birds sitting on the sill. We had front row seats to a wild animal park, this guy kept coming back for more and more. We have film to prove it. Oh wait, its snowing outside! Sick!!!
So basically, Sunday was a POWDER DAY and we had fun poking around the area looking for mellow terrain to ride and stay safe from avalanche danger. Some good carnage was had at a dip in the run that took everyone’s knees out as well as gobbling a ski or two.
Then we headed home along the trail as darkness prevailed. Good strong group!
